Jo Nolan’s works emerge through the processes of painting itself. Reaching for poetic complexity through slow layering of transparent, opaque and iridescent pigments, harnessing light and shadow, her works lend visibility to the moods and drama of human experience.

Through painting, Nolan aims to feel beneath the surface of the seen towards the less comprehensible, the ambiguous and the inexplicable realms.

Her early years painting at dawn with her father, nurtured a love of the unknowable darkness and the mysteries of the half light, the tension between ancient rhythms and truths of nature and the wildly erratic forces of the world in which we find ourselves.

Jo holds a Master of Art (Honours in Excellence) from the University of NSW..
